Hello Kitty - Part Deuce - Exploring Glorious China

Of course, the Olympics celebrate more than the skills of atheletes like Hello Kitty; they also allow the host nation to show off its culture and history. After her success at the games, Hello Kitty took in some of the sites, wearing local garb in the hopes of deflecting from her new-found Olympic fame!

Freaky Tuesday (Happy Tax Day!!!)

This afternoon, around 2 pm, the office chatter reached a feverish pitch . . . expecting to see a baby panda or 4 foot tall cardboard birthday cake, I was shocked to learn that world-famous insane man Robert Alain was climbing the Four Seasons Hotel next door with his bare hands and no safety equipment (a mere 46 stories high)!!

Picture of the entire building to give you an idea about scale (sorry about the glare).

On the way up (you may need to click on the picture to get "full screen") - in case you can't tell, Robert Alain is the one in the red pants!

And finally, at the top (and greeted by the PO-LEECE)!

We were both able to watch the climb from our respective offices. And the best part is, Alain did it to raise awareness about global warming (link will also show professional photographs). Interestingly enough, we probably would not have been able to see the climb if China had not closed down its coal-run factories on the mainland in anticipation of the arrival of the Olympic torch!

Hello Kitty - Gold Medalist and Olympian

Olympic Fever is taking hold and what better way to celebrate than to harness the power of Hello Kitty and friends! We went to a local mall to visit the local Ikea . . . as a bonus, the mall was slathered in Olympic Hello Kitty Fever. Hello Kitty and her motley crew posed on a replication of the Great Wall of China . . .

They also demonstrated some of the events we can expect to see at the Olympics . . .

Equestrian. . .

Tennis . . .

Relay racing . . . M - let go of the baton!!!!

and of course table tennis. . .

Pandaba shows us the parallel bars (note how he is wearing a panda hoodie)!

and Melody demonstrates assassination - oops, I mean shooting.

But in the end, it's Ms. Kitty (or Hello to her friends) who takes the day!

If You've Got a Problem and No One Else Can Help . . .

Call these guys?

FYI - there's an actual guy inside of there. Just goes to show you that hanging out in the toy section of Japanese department stores has its own rewards . . .

The Destiny of the Goldfish

Goldfish are big business in Hong Kong. They are prized as they are thought to absorb any surrounding bad luck. As such, the trading floors where we both work have goldfish aquariums.

Sadly, when the goldfish absorb all the bad luck they can take, they die and are replaced with younger, better-looking and less demanding goldfish. And so the vicious cycle continues . . .

Below are some pictures from the goldfish market - note the hungry look in the eyes of the unadopted and unloved goldfish, ignorant of their fates.

Beware the Feral Pigeon

At a recent trip to Hong Kong's Bird Market, we encountered the set of signs below, warning of us of the dangers associated with the menacing feral pigeon.

Despite such zealous warning, we ignored our fears and enjoyed various fowl (no pigeons were encountered either).
